Large organizations
VARD is a preeminent designer and shipbuilder of high-quality specialized vessels for the global market. With more than 8,000 employees worldwide, Vard operates shipbuilding facilities at home in Norway, as well as in Romania, Brazil, and Vietnam. Vard provides high-end design and engineering services to the global maritime industry, such as advanced power and automation systems, deck handling equipment, and vessel accommodation solutions.
Our portfolio consists of complete systems and products ranging from integrated control- and automation systems, EMS/PMS, propulsion control, drives, switchboards, electric motors, and transformers to bridge solutions. Our wide range of products are named e-SEAMatic® and e-SEA®.
Our extensive scope of work can be applied with great success to both new builds as well as retrofit and conversion of existing vessels. We focus on enabling our customers to take an idea or request from concept to an integrated and fully functional product or system. This is particularly the case for technology to achieve zero-emission or significant reduction in emissions. In addition to our complete solutions for the maritime segment, we also have a wide range of customized products as well as a well established and extensive service and support for our customers both onshore and offshore.
Maritime Robotics delivers products and services within the area of unmanned vessels for maritime data collection. Maritime Robotics is a pioneer company in the development of unmanned surface vehicles (USV) and has operated these vessels from out base at headquarters in Trondheim since 2006. USVs can provide significantly lower costs and increased safety in the maritime operations for sensor-based data collection. Maritime Robotics jobs especially towards markets such as geophysical data collection and surveys, environmental monitoring, defence and security.
ABB is a pioneering technology leader with a comprehensive offering for digital industries. With a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB is today a leader in digital industries with four customer-focused, globally leading businesses: Electrification, Industrial Automation, Motion, and Robotics & Discrete Automation, supported by its common ABB Ability(TM) digital platform. ABB's marketleading Power Grids business will be divested to Hitachi in 2020. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees.
The University of Southeast Norway (USN) is the country's fourthd largest university, measured in the total number of students. We are approximatly 18,000 students and 1,600 staff, spread over eight campuses: Drammen, Vestfold, Kongsberg, Ringerike, Bø, Notodden, Porsgrunn and Rauland. The University of Southeast Norway was formed on 1 January 2016, when Buskerud and Vestfold University College merged with Telemark University College.
Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) is the prime institution responsible for defence-related research in Norway. The Establishment is the chief adviser on defence-related science and technology to the Ministry of Defence and the Norwegian Armed Forces' military organization.
Medium organizations
Remota® offers remote operations and semi-autonomous maritime services to the offshore and marine industries, through the use of Remote Operating Centers (ROC).
Zeabuz is developing the key technologies and solutions that will enable a new generation of flexible, adaptable, movable and scalable waterborne mobility solutions, connecting communities across and along their waterways.
Our autonomous passenger ferries will be low cost, efficient, available for 24/7 operation and integrate with other smart mobility solutions. The full Zeabuz mobility system includes the autonomous ferries, docking stations with wireless charging, passenger handling and ticketing systems, secure wireless communication and a remote support centre.
Massterly is a joint venture between Kongsberg and Wilhelmsen; combining Kongsberg's world leading technology with automation, cyber security and autonomy with Wilhelmsen's operational expertise within shipping, logistics and terminals. It is the world's first company which is set up to operate autonomous vessels and offer services in the customers' entire value chain (from design and development of vessels and control systems, financing, insurances, port logistics and ship management). Massterly will enable a shift of polluting road transport to emission-free, safe and efficient transport by sea and inland waterways.
Electronic Chart Centre (ECC) is a state owned company, delivering electronic chart services globally to producing Hydrographic Offices and distributors through the PRIMAR network. Our interest in e-navigation and autonomous shipping relates to research projects in regard to operational testing and the facilitation to support future standardized data products coming from IHO (International Hydrographic Organization). The result of this work will contribute to the development of safe autonomous ship navigation in the future.
Marine Technologies LLC (MT) is a U.S.-based company with an R&D department in Norway. MT is dedicated to providing superior vessel control solutions for all types of vessels, from large offshore specialty vessels, accommodation vessels and wind field supply vessels to smaller tug boats and luxury yachts. MT products include dynamic positioning systems, integrated bridge systems and VSAT communications, including remote access for diagnostics and monitoring.
Created in 1828, Bureau Veritas is a global leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC), delivering high quality services to help clients meet the growing challenges of quality, safety, environmental protection and social responsibility.
Small organizations
Offshore Sensing AS is a Norwegian technology company specialising in autonomous ocean observation using the Sailbuoy, an unmanned surface vessel (USV) powered by wind and solar energy. The company provides sustainable and cost-effective solutions for collecting ocean data in sectors such as offshore energy, environmental monitoring, defence, and marine research. With global deployments, Offshore Sensing helps clients reduce operational costs and carbon footprints while gaining access to real-time, high-resolution ocean data.
Pioneering automated lifting solutions for enhanced safety
TellMie AS er et uavhengig konsulentselskap etablert i 1996 på Kongsberg. Selskapet har gjennom årene utført en rekke oppdrag, både for det militære og sivile marked. Dette har vært utarbeidelse av kravspesifikasjoner til større systemleveranser og simulatorsystemer, bistand til evaluering av tilbud, samt prosjektledelse. Selskapets spesialkompetanse er forretningsutvikling, system- og brukersentrert design, autonomi og menneske-maskin interaksjon for kyber-fysiske systemer innenfor domener som akvakultur og havbruk, kommando, kontroll & informasjonssystemer (KKIS), simulatorer, dynamisk posisjonering og autonome fartøyer og droner.
ITS Norway is a membership organization that works to ensure that passenger and freight transport is as sustainable, user-friendly and efficient as possible. Our focus is on increased use of ICT and automation in the transport sector. Sustainability cannot be achieved without better utilization of sea transport and this is a target activity in ITS Norway. The maritime sector is dependent on international solutions and standards, so we actively participate in international organizations such as ISO, IEC, IMO and others. This is closely linked to autonomy, which we collaborate with NFAS to develop in the same organizations.
The Ocean Autonomy Cluster is Norway’s leading hub for expertise on ocean autonomy. Consisting of both companies and R&D institutions, the cluster combines research and technological development, suppliers of technology, components and systems, as well as forward-leaning investors. Through cooperation, the cluster’s participants pursue safer, more efficient and precise operations at sea, contributing to a more sustainable use of the world’s oceans.
The Ocean Autonomy Cluster seeks to utilize these opportunities through combining the experience from Norway’s maritime and offshore industry, developers, suppliers and award-winning R&D institutions. The main goal of the Ocean Autonomy Cluster is to strengthen Norway’s global leadership role in the development and commercialization of future autonomous ocean technologies and solutions.
Cities all over the world are closely connected to water, yet today in most places, the waterways are seen as obstacles to be conquered by building costly tunnels and bridges which themselves become chokepoints causing delays and unwanted emissions. Hyke's Hydrolift Smart City Ferries believe in restoring waterways to their former glory, as the very lifeline of a city and an integral part of its transport network. Re-activating the waterways with an autonomous fleet of sleek, efficient, and environmentally sustainable ferries will cut emissions, reduce travel times, and save money. The objective is to over time build a worldwide urban mobility brand (Hyke) offering seamless, multi-modal passage to passengers and light cargo networked together by technology to form tomorrow´s smart city mobility infrastructure.

Benefits of membership
Membership in NFAS contributes to more momentum in the development of autonomous ships as well as other autonomous and maritime applications of the technology. This includes technology, accept criteria, regulations and standards as well as building public support for these solutions. NFAS will also work to emphasize the importance of autonomous ship technology in national and international research strategies.
NFAS will be an information dissemination network for users, practitioners, authorities and others. This is intended to disseminate and develop new ideas as well as providing a discussion forum for finding good solutions to technical and operational problems.
Members of NFAS will also be able to participate in more formal working groups to undertake more specific tasks under the auspices of NFAS.
Finally, members will get exclusive invitations to closed workshops and seminars as well as discounts or free access to our larger conferences.

Applying for membership
Membership is open to all Norwegian Organisations and persons. To become a member, check the organisation sizes and dues below and fill in the Membership form (Norwegian only - docx format).
Sign it, scan it and send it as email to the NFAS manager. Please include a company logo if appropriate, as well as short description of the organisation suitable for publication on our web pages.
