In Norway, we are now investigating the possibility of integrating developments in maritime digitalization, including automation and autonomy, into the more general Intelligent Transport System (ITS) work that is going on around the world (e.g. ITS World Congress).
ITS has so far mainly be concentrated around cars and roads. Still, as autonomy and automation increase in these domains, there may be important synergies in terms of architectures or functionality. These synergies may also apply to ship-port interfaces and further transport of cargo through transshipment to hinterland transport.
There is also a political dimension to this as many ministries of transport (including in Norway) view ITS as an essential part of the future mobility and cargo transport systems. At this point, we are interested in establishing contacts with other organizations that have similar interests or are interested in pursuing similar investigations.
